Computed tomography (CT scan or CAT scan) is a painless, non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique used to analyse and inspect interior body structures, and anatomical structures, as well as detect diseases or ailments.
How does a CT Scan capture images?
A CT scan’s X-ray beam travels in circles around the body. This captures several views of the same organ or structure. The X-ray data is routed to a computer, which analyses it and displays it in three dimensions. The technology employs 3D imaging modalities to produce more detailed images that can be used to evaluate defects and malformations in any part of the body.
CT scans can be performed with or without ‘contrast’. Contrast is a chemical that can be taken orally or injected intravenously to increase the visibility of tissue or organs.
A CT scan has many applications but it’s especially useful for quickly examining people who may have internal injuries due to an accident or other types of traumas.
